A red-winged blackbird alights from a tree in Afton Forest Preserve south of DeKalb a recent evening. The DeKalb County Forest Preserve was established in 1940 and now comprises fourteen tracts of land and waterways that are homes to hundreds of varieties of animals and plants native to Northern Illinois.
