Paul Carpenter crests the top of a hill on his road bike on Perry Road near Somonauk Road south of DeKalb on a recent morning. Carpenter, the chair of the Northern Illinois University Kinesiology and Physical Education Department, cycles approximately 30 miles each way to work from his home in Batavia each day beginning around 5:30 a.m. While he now races in ultra-cycling events of 150 miles and longer, when he first began riding to work, "It was an opportunity to get some time of my own," he said.
